Most people may think that electrostatic filters are only effective in filtering particles. However, it is unclear whether they can be used for sterilization and disinfection. Today, we will answer this question with a MayAir electrostatic filter.

01 Can electrostatic filters do sterilization?

A: Yes. As early as 1967, Sale AJH et al. [1] in an overseas research initiative found that a high-voltage pulsed electric field has a bactericidal effect. In China, Chen Jian [2] also published related research on high-voltage pulsed discharge sterilization in 1998. Therefore, the electrostatic filter, which also has the characteristics of high-voltage discharge, can effectively kill bacteria.

02 Can electrostatic filters kill viruses?

A: Yes. Mr. Zhu Yimin, Kong Xiangpeng, et al. from Dalian Maritime University [3] published related research papers funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2005, indicated that Parainfluenza virus (PIV) can be killed when it passes through the corona discharge area.

03 What is the principle made the electrostatic filters sterilize and kill viruses?

A: On the one hand, the high-voltage discharge can generate many high-energy participles, ultraviolet light, and free radicals to break the bacteria’s cell wall and destroy the virus. Bacteria and viruses do not exist alone and usually attach to particles or aerosols. The electrostatic filter can kill these bacteria and viruses as it absorbs the particles and aerosols on the plate, which possess a high-intensity electric field.

04 Is there any relevant standards or specification recognized by the country?

A: As early as 2002, when the Ministry of Health announced the "Technical Specification for Disinfection" (2002 Edition), electrostatic adsorption was one of the regulated disinfection factors used in hospital air disinfection machines.

05 Do electrostatic filters produce ozone?

A: Yes, but it can be controlled. The high-voltage discharge will generate ozone, but through years of research and development and improvement by MayAir, coupled with the use of advanced processing and assembly processes, the ozone generation can be controlled at 0.002-0.003mg/m3, far lower than the national requirement of 0.1mg /m3. There is no need to worry about trace amounts of ozone. It is a strong oxidant and can kill bacteria and viruses, as confirmed by the National P3 Laboratory [4].

Principle

Electrostatic adsorption

Use high-voltage discharge to kill bacteria and viruses, while adsorbing particulate matter, aerosols, etc.

HEPA complex silver ions

Intercept particles, aerosols, and bacteria and viruses attached to them. The activity of silver ions is used to kill bacteria and viruses.

Ultra Violet (UV)

The use of ultraviolet light energy to destroy the organic matter of bacteria and viruses, therefore killing the bacteria and viruses.

Plasma

Using a plasma generator to generate plasma where the plasma activity is very high. It is used to destroy the organic matter of bacteria and viruses, therefore killing the virus.

Photocatalyst

UV irradiates the photocatalyst, photochemical reaction occurs, and many strong oxidants-hydroxide ions are generated. The hydroxide ions can oxidize the organic matter of bacteria and viruses, thereby killing viruses.

Negative ions

Negative ions are negatively charged and can have a de-energizing effect with the organic matter on the bacteria and viruses. The bacteria and viruses lose their viability to create disinfection.
